    Going Insane in the Brain

Hey every1 this is my 5th day without being able to play games or listen to music and am contemplating suicide . I have read and tried some of the advice on the nine pages listed under no sound, but sadly no sound. My nightmare began on PornoTube the site I was drawn into. After trying to Run a clip to no avail, my compter suddenly rebooted itself and I knew. Yup on my toolbar was a big red circle with an X, after rebooting advised me my compter had been infected and it was installing software to help before I lost important data. So a scan starts running without my permission and informs me I have like two hundred errors and it's gonna cost. Well right away I uninstall this software and reboot. The program is gone, but still on my toolbar a big red circle with an X saying the same thing. I quickly notice that during the reboot I did not hear the usual bells and whistles and hear I am. THE VITALS my system is a GATEWAY 500S purchased 2002, OS WINDOWS XP Home Edition service pack 3. I have added RAM, NVIDIA graphics and of course the Windows XP. I see in my Device Manager under Sound these titles Avance AC97 Audio, Legacy Audio Drivers, Legacy Video Capture Devices, Logitech Mic, Media Control devices..All with a yellow circle and black exclamation inside. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all drvrs, but get same results, I tried updates for all I could find and still no go, but now have new titles under sound such as; Microsoft Streaming Clock Proxy, MS Streaming Quality manager Proxy, MS Streaming Service Proxy, SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio this one I tried to reinstall. I spoke to Gateway thru online help told me I needed a new PCI card. Sorry so long any help appreciated GREATLY & THANK YOU.. DESPERATELY Alex

If you've contracted a virus and you can't get rid of it and the problems it has caused, you might as well back up important data, format, and reinstall windows.

You'll spend more time dealing with this virus and the problems it has caused than if you were to just format and start over.

Alternatively run HiJackThis and post in our virus support forum ... there's a bunch of threads there discussing your red circle with the white cross (the top thread right now is entitled exactly this) ... check them out forum link

As far as I know I have gotten rid of the virus, although my computer is running significantly slower. I'm very reluctant to run my recovery disc, because in the past six years I have accumulated a lot of important information. Also I have I-Tunes which holds about two to three hundred dollars of music. I am still hoping someone can advise me how to repair my Audio Drivers. THANK YOU BOTH MEDIALINT and Mr. Danny for taking the time and responding. I did see another post were this guy bought an external sound card. Would this fix my problem? Oh Yeah Medialint thanks for showing me that i'm not the only one dealing with this virus. There's some twisted minds out doing this....Alex

I still suggest you take your problem over to virus support, there are people there with the patience of a saint that can help you as long as you're friendly and listen to their advice.

If your problem started with a virus, and the computer seems slow, and the result of the virus is still not resolved then I suspect you still have an infection.

However if you have the money to spare you can always try installing another sound card. Rather than an external I'd suggest a generic soundblaster, I picked one of those up OEM at central computer a few weeks ago for under $30

First check BIOS, make sure if you're using the motherboard sound card that onboard sound is turned on (sometimes this is called "legacy audio" or something slightly different, you should know it when you see it though. If you replace that and go with the soundblaster or something else you might want to go back into BIOS at that time and turn onboard off. To get into BIOS hit the magic setup key as the computer boots (can be ins, del, F8 or some other key depending, your computer should tell you)

Sheppard: Yeah, well I try not to let them tell me what I can and can't do.
Neera: You do not fear them?
Sheppard: The wraith, nah. Now clowns that's another story. They scare the crap out of me.
