Internal DVD Rom shows as External plugged into USB port

I have a Dell computer with and internal RW/DVD (hl-dt-st-rw/dvd gcc 4241n). For some reason it's appearing in my computer as external hardware plugged into my usb port. It works and plays and everything, but when I plug other devices into my usb port (i.e. ipod, flash drive), those other devices will not work unless I go down and first "safely remove" the DVD player from my usb port. I'm not sure what to do to make this show as internal hardware. Do I need to find and install the driver?
