my friend has a p4 2G on an intel 850 m/b with 128*2 RDRAM and an nvidia riva tnt2 graphics card(32mb).
he found his games working slow so i suggested he change his graphics card (he is going for a 128mb geforce). today he called me up and told me that his game is hanging and he is getting the virtual mem low error. so i told him to increase his page file. that is when he popped me the question which i am putting here. if the game requires RAM, should i increase my ram or change my video card? or what use is changing the video card if my RAM is low? i would like to know which ram is used for what and what does the number (RAM used) in the task manager indicate. thanks. |

The RAM is fine and I don't think he had to increase his page file. He just needs a new video card. His card, is crap and on top of that it only has 32MB of video RAM. Just getting any upgrade, even something as cheap as the Geforce5200 will get rid of most of his problems if his games are too demanding. (However I recommend getting something better for the future.)

So, has he changed the video card out already?
Most newer games are graphics-intensive like you wouldn't believe-- all those shadings and texture use a lot of number crunching and a lot of memory. A video card with significant amount of memory on it will relieve the CPU and conventional RAM for working on the game play itslef and things will go a tad faster. Your advice is good. Getting the 128Mb card will help his game along immensely, and later on he could throw out a few bucks and double his RAM, but I think right now he is better served with a better graphics card.

we will be going tomorrow to shop for the card. he went looking for the cards but he forgot the model of the geforce. hence i am unable to post it here. he mentioned though, that it is the only geforce available in all the shops he visited.
