Is my sound card even working?

Hi,
Okay heres my problem my computer up and died on me a few months ago and I just recently able to get it going again. Before my dumb comp crashed all my audio and video hardware was working. Now that everything eles is back my sound is completly gone. I went to Intel and downloaded my chipsets, still nothing. I have sound card installed on my comp, (don't ask me what kind, cause for the life of me I can't remember) The really odd thing is when I try to play a song I get a warning telling me "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly." but when I play video I get images, but no warning or audio.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on? Is it my sound card or somthing else?
Thanks in advance.
Jan Jan

Hi Jan_Jan and welcome to Dev Shed.

Is this on-board sound or an aftermarket sound card ? If it is on-board, have you checked to make sure that it is enabled in the BIOS ? Do you have the correct drivers installed ?

It's on-board, and I haven't checked the BIOS because I wasn't sure exactly how to do that, or if it even work for me. And I don't know if I have the correct drivers installed because I don't know which drivers to install.

To get into your BIOS, when your machine first switches on, after the POST test and before the operating system starts to load, it should tell you which key to press to enter 'System Setup'. This is usually 'F1', 'F2', 'F10', 'F12' or the 'Del' key - it's dependent on the make of your system as to which key, but it should tell you on screen.

Once you get into there, you need to look through the BIOS screens for 'Onboard Sound'. Again, the screen this is in could be any dependent on the make/model of the BIOS on your motherboard but it maybe in something such as 'Onboard Devices' or under 'Advanced' and then 'Peripheral Configuration'. Best to scroll through until you see what you need.

As for the drivers, if you post the make/model of your motherboard, then I'll have a look for the correct drivers for you.

*sheepish grin* I should of known how to get into the bios, I've done it before. Anyway it said audio was enabled. So that can't be the problem, maybe I'm just not meant to have sound.
Oh and my motherboard is an Intel Corporation D845GRG AAA84534-300 (I hope that is the info you are after)

Before I can look for the correct drivers for you, what version of Windows are you running ? If it is XP, is it Home or Pro ?

It's Windows XP Home Edition. Also on a side note whenever I try to get into the volume control on my computer it tells me "There are no active mixer devices available." Does that make a diffrence? I didn't even think about mentioning that before.
