Keyboard fights with Sound
Hello
When playing any type of audio on my PC, any typing on the keyboard interferes with sound - slow it down, makes it completely stuttery. All I can see in Control Panel under System | Hardware | Device Manager is a ! against each of the 2 DVD drives, however they both work fine. Keyboard has IRQ 1 but can't see IRQ of DVD drives. Using Win XP. Where to start analysing????? Many thanks |

Before looking at IRQ channels, have you updated the latest drivers for your soundcard ?
Is this a PS/2 or USB keyboard ?

Have checked sound card ..doesn't come up with any new drivers. Have diabled DVD drives just in case ...still have same problem with typing causing complete break up of sound.
Have tried to check IRQs at startup ...KB is def on IRQ1 ..not so easy to spot Sound Card IRQ. Any diagnostic suggestions? |

No problem. If you're having trouble locating drivers for your sound card, just post back with the make/model of it and I'll have a look for them for you.

Sound card
thanks ...it's a Yamaha AC-XG Driver date: 16/09/2002 version: 6.13.10.3154
However ..from the days when things often had conflicts (win 95) it does remind me of a conflict situation. Win XP remorts that the sound card is on IRQ 18 and the KB on 1. thanks |

What media player are you playing the music through ?

It almost seems as if you have some process that's firing sound (even if you can't hear it) as you type. That might be something that would come with a disability-enabled setting or the like. I would see no other reason why typing would do this. Some keyboards come with some pretty bloated "utilities" that are often more trouble than they are worth, and this might be suspect as well.
If you have one of those keyboard utilities, uninstall or disable and see if it helps. Turn off the music and see if you hear any sound (turn up the volume to hear faint pops, etc) as you type. Keyboards should work fine without any drivers or utilities (except the 'special' keys and features) If this is the only thing causing problems I'd find it hard to fault the soundcard or its drivers immediately. It seems something else funky is going on. Um ... this isn't a wireless keyboard by any chance? (interference being a possibility)

Hello to you both - thanks
1. Using Win media player 10 ..but same happened in earlier version. However, also happens with using ANY sound eg using Skype, etc. 2. No, keyboard not wireless. Tried suggestion of switching off music and then turning up volume full. No resultant click whn I type ..BUT when I click Back and Forward arrows on Browser (to move pages), I'm getting loud click through speakers when I click LH mouse button. Normal? |

Is it a multimedia keyboard that you are using ?

No ...just a 'normal' keyboard.
The sound, btw, would seem to be on-board so it's not as if I can try shifting cards between slots. Did take an unused TV card out, but to no avail. |
