LAN Internet Problem
As most of you have probably seen, i got a computer and have been having major problems with it. I finally got it up for the second time and got on the internet and everything but then i remembered i had to install some drivers for my mobo. I installed a LAN driver along with video, audio, etc. When i restarted my computer, i could no longer get on the internet. I have tried reconfiguring my internet access and i uninstalled the LAN Drivers, but my internet still doesnt work. Any suggestions on getting it to work?

Are you on a network ? If not, why did you download LAN drivers ?
Do you have the correct drivers for your modem ? Is it dial-up or Broadband ? Internal/External/USB modem ?? What exactly happens when you try to connect, do you get any error messages ? The more details you can give to us, the better. ![]() |

heh, sorry, i didnt think about that stuff
Yes i am on a network, i didnt really think about it until after i got the lan drivers. Im not sure if i have the correct drivers for my modem, and its an external broadband modem. Nothing happens when i try to connect. I am supposed to be connected all the time, but i cant get connected at all currently. No error messages or anything, just the message that pops up saying "www.google.com could not be found" or w/e when i open IE. |

In Device manager, remove your network card, reboot and it should pick it up automatically.
If it's not there, then Add Hardware, and select the right drivers for the chipset on your NIC When your NIC is installed, check the TCP/IP properties, and ensure it is set to "Automatic Configuration", then open a command console (Start->Run->cmd.exe), and type ipconfig /renew. If you don't recognise the internal IP's then post the info from the broken PC, and one that's working. Please don't post any external IP addresses which can identify your machine on the net. Have you got a firewall installed on the machine, or on a router at your network interface Regards --Ax |

I tried what you said and uninstalled the card and restarted the computer and sure enough it was installed again. I went into the TCP/IP properties and Automatic Configuration was already checked. I then went to the command console and put in ipconfig /renew and it said "An error occured while renewing interface Local Area Connection : The system cannot find the file specified." I check ipconfig in the command console as well, and i have no ip, nor subnet mask, nor default gateway, etc. When i check the connection, it says that it is connected yet nothing else on my computer suggests that it is in fact connected. I do not have a firewall on this computer besides the Windows firewall, and i do not believe i have one enabled on the router. Any other suggestions?

Look at the configuration of your PC that works, and set up your NIC to be in that range, same subnet mask, same default GW, and then try pinging the other host, and the router's ip

sorry had to consume some BEEEER, oh, how I love that word, rhymes with Weeeir
/pardon me on the PC that works, WinKey + R ==> Start--> Run type cmd type ipconfig you'll get a list of information, read data IP address--> address by which your PC is indentifiable on your LAN Subnet mask--> tells you how many machines can see you, and how machines you can see Default Gateway--> you need one of these to get out onto the bad wide web .... Copy the settings, except IP address (similar but Žsame) make sure you can ping external IP's, you're on |

have you...
unplugged your external broadband modem to refresh its settings.. sounds silly but this is relevant (if your external modem is connected via lan). Installing new lan drivers changes many things... unplug the broadband modem for about 15 seconds, then turn it back on, then turn your pc on, on turning on the modem should then flush old lan settings and map the new ones to it... i have had to to it with my external (blueyonder) modem when i updated my lan drivers and it worked.. Hope this helps
