Laptop Resolution.
Ive recently purchased a Sony VAIO from ebay.
The problem I am having is getting the resolution higher than 1024 x 768, there are other settings but these are unusable. Usually on XP there are a few settings for the resolution but i only have 4. It is a Sony PCG-FX405 with a ATI Rage 8mb mobility graphics card, its about 3 years old so maybe it can only handle 1024 x 768. Ive also downloaded the drivers from the Sony site but still no joy. Does anyone have any insight on this? |

You may be limited to that resolution because of the LCD display.

It claims to be capable to 1280x1024. Instead of downloading drivers from sony, try downloading the drivers from ATI ... though who knows what Sony Hacks they did, Vaios are a mess ... my roommate has one and both myself and another roommate (a former system administrator) have wanted to throw that thing through the window while "helping" him "fix" it ... ^ but yeah the monitor might be limiting it itself ..

A heuristic way to tell if you are at the maximum resolution of your LCD is if the display looks crisp, rather than with blurred edges. If the display looks crisp, then that's probably as good as it gets unless you are using a very substantially reduced resolution. This is because for a crisp picture, the operating resolution has to line up properly with the edges of the physical pixels, and this can only happen if the physical vertical and horizontal resolutions are respectively multiples of the vertical and horizontal resolutions currently in use. If your display looks crisp at 1024x768, then either that is the maximum resolution or the maximum resolution is a lot better (the resolution can be doubled either horizontally or vertically), which seems unlikely. |
