Talking Lost Audio on Laptop

Hi guys,

New here I have a Compaq Presario 1200 notebook. I removed the internal speakers and have been using externals for about 6 months. All of a sudden, about 2 months ago, all audio ceased. I had some virus problems that I got fixed using adaware, spybot, and hijack this. About 3 days or so after I fixed the problems, I lost audio. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the sound card (VIA AC'97 Audio Controller (WDM)). I tried reinstalling new drivers. I'm running Windows 2000 professional. Any idea of what to do? Nothing seems to be muted anywhere. Please help!

Hey karsh44, thanks for your reply.

Yes, I've tried new speakers. In fact, I've tried 3 different speakers. The speakers work fine with my MP3 discman. When I plug the little plug for the speakers into one of two inputs in the laptop, they make a crackling noise, but as soon as it's in all the way, there's no noise.

Thanks!
