Monitor/Graphics card problem?

Hi,

Recently my monitor has been 'blacking out'.
The screen will go black for no reason, you can still the screen is still working as it is lit.And the p.c is ticking over just fine. The only way to return the desktop is to reboot. This has happened maybe 3 times in the last month.
But today i had another issue.

Started to get refresh rate warnings popping up after playing a game, saying it was running at a lower than recommended rate.

It has always run at 1024 x 768 32bit 85mhz.

Chatting to a friend earlier, he suggested the graphics card may be on its way out....or the drivers.

So i have done a clean uninstall of nvidia 66.93 drivers and installed 71.84.
Still getting the refresh warnings on two reboots during this time.
On the third it stops warnings. When i run a game, then exit to desktop......same black out.

Any suggestions guys??

Graphics card Nvidia FX 5600 XT 256mb.less than two years old.

Monitor Mitsubishi DP 230 SB 22inch CRT.Also less than two years old.

Wow.. you have a 22inch and you're only running at 1024x768? You blind son? Heh.. jus kidding.. But do you have another monitor you can try on that screen? I dont think the card would just give crappy refresh rates, so I'm almost sure it's you're monitor. And if you can try to change the resolution and/or refresh rate to something else (higher as suggested and if your monitor supports it) to see if that will work for you.

It is all up to you and what you are comfortable seeing. Right now I have a 19 inch at 1280x1024@75Hz. This is what most people have their 19 inch screens at. Since yours is a 22 inch don't you think the text on your screen is. well HUGE? I think you should try 1600x1200 or higher if possible. And I also recommend you also use th highest refresh rate possible, it causes less eye strain.

I've been under the impression that the lower the refresh rate, the less stress on the monitor and the longer it will last.
The higher the refresh rate will equate to less eye strain and the longer your vision will last.

So, would you rather shorten the life of your monitor or go partially blind?
