mac can format it as FAT, you just have to tell it, go to /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility (or whatever they are calling it for your release), then select the partition you want to format, go the the format/erase tab, it will let you format it, it defaults to HFS/HFS+, but for windows you need to select MS-DOS from the pull down, then proceed with the format and save your files on it, windows will be able to read it
