Need help with video card upgrade

I know this topic comes up constantly but I couldn't find a thread with a system like mine.

I have a P4 1.6 GHz that I bought about 2.5 years ago. I want to upgrade to a mid-range card but have been told I shouldn't upgrade to certain cards cause I would have to upgrade other stuff too. I'm kinda bad with what works best, whats compatible with what and so on.

The main purpose of the new card will be to play games (I'm that cool ). Can someone help me with what would be a good card to upgrade to, would I likely need other upgrades (like a new motherboard) and if you need any more info to help me out? (I've been looking at the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro to let you know what kind of mid-range I'm talking about, but thats not really based on much).

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I'd assume your mobo has AGP slot. You need to see if it supports AGP 4x and/or 8x. In other words, if the 9800 Pro runs 8x AGP you need to make sure it will work in your mobo. I might get a 9800 Pro too. I don't know what other stuff you'd have to upgrade.

a AGP 8x will work in a AGP4x slot due to they are compatible or most of them are.

So if I got an ATI 9800 Pro, how easy would it be to fry it? As in if I leave my comp on too long or something.

If you install it right, shoudln't be any problem at all. I have one (OC'd, no less), and I leave my computer on pretty much 24/7.
