New bluray drive not detected by Vista

Greetings guys,

Once again my below average tech knowledge and my desire to do it myself have bit me in the but.

I recently bought a LG internal bluray drive from newegg. I installed the drive myself, this was my first SATA optical drive install.

The drive shows up in the bios. The drive is getting power, I can open and close it, but like the tag line says the drive will NOT appear in Vista.

I tried deleting the filters (as suggested on other websites) and it didn't actually do anything.

So now I've got the BD drive installed, shows up in the bios, won't show anywhere on Vista, and I'm stuck. I've got no idea if I should RMA the drive, or I'm just doing something wrong. Unfortunately LG support wasnt' very helpful:

"Uh, what drive is that? Yeah that's a new one I think. I've got no idea how to help you, nobody has called me on this yet. Call microsoft."

Any tips?

Currently running
Asus M3A
AMD Athlon 64x2 5600+
Nvidia 9800gtx +
Sony IDE dvd drive/burner
8 gigs of ram
2x sata hds
Running windows Vista 64.

Cheers,

-S

Does it show up in the device manager, albeit with an exclamation mark ?

Have you looked in Disk Management too ?

What's the model number of the drive ?

Doesn't show up in the device manager or disk manager. The only thing showing up is my two hard drives and my dvd drive.

I actually did just re-install Vista (finally abandoning XP). The funny thing was, before I did this, the drive DID show up in XP, albeit it was causing my OS to lag heavily and then it vanished from there--with a sudden freeing up of OS laggyness.

The model is... if I can find it at this late hour... LG CH08.

*edit

Does it matter what SATA port I plugged it into on the MOBO? I didn't think that it did. I also don't really know what I'm doing at all software wise, and I tried messing around in the bios where I have a little more grounding than trouble shooting Windows, but importantly not much.

Cheers,

Scott

So I have an update:

Today I booted my machine and the drive showed up. I thought it was a miracle. I used the drive to install the software bundle that came with it, so I know it works.

I then restarted my computer at the prompt.

And you guessed it: computer rebooted, drive no longer there.

If you re-boot again, does it show ? If you boot in safe mode, does the drive show ?

I'm about to grabe a bite to eat so don't have time to boot into safemode, but...

The drive showed up, I was able to transfer data from a disk in the drive to my HD.

Rebooted the computer, the drive was then gone again.

Rebooted the computer again and the drive reappeared again.

So to sum up quickly, I've booted my machine 3 times today.

1st time drive showed up and worked
2nd time drive gone again
3rd time drive their again (and working)

To answer the previous question, no, it doesn't show up when booted into safe mode.

Cheers,

I'm still having this problem. The drive magically began to work over the last month, and it has recently taken to vanishing again.

It shows up in the bios still, vista simply doesn't recognize it. Though I did for awhile have it show up with a question mark by it.

Have you updated all related firmware (for your motherboard and the drive) as well as drivers for the related devices?

Also, try changing the drive settings inside your bios. AHCI configuration can cause problems like this. I'd also try changing the port it's connected to on the motherboard.
