Here is what fixed my pc...
1.) Power off
2.) Unplug Tower
3.) Open tower
4.) pull out CMOS battery for half minute and hold on power button on tower to assure no power running through
5.) Re-insert CMOS battery
6.) Plug in tower and power on
-when you get to the desktop, it should see the missing hardware again and allow you to reinstall.

same problem :(
I also have an intel G965 chipset mainboard with onboard sound... but even though it's enabled in BIOS, it isn't detected... I can't install drivers, and I get the same error... "Device object missing" - this is a new system and everything works well except this... also, I had to wait months for the system to arrive and therefore I'm about to cry...
I've tried updating BIOS, installing XP fixes, SP2, and a lot of messing around in BIOS and in XP... is it just me, or is this onboard sound complete and utter trash?
...sorry, just really frustrated. I think these things are defective, I don't know what to do

NO audio device found
I have an intel 945G chipset with a Big Lake motherboard that worked beautifully until recently when I had to do a windows XP system restore, then the audio devices disseapeared. In the sound panel all options are greyed out and no audio devices detected is displayed. The mobo disks have an install for Intel Audio Studio but it fails to install. In the bios sound is enabled. It's definetly onboard sound. I managed to install intel audio studio but it just says that Intel HD Audio drivers must be loaded. I cant find those to download on the Intel site because the only download is a Sigmatel driver instal which when i try to install it an error pops up saying no device object detected. The speakers used to work great and the connection is still in and plugged into the correct port. Headphones don't work either and under my drivers all i see is:
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Video Codecs
Please Help.

No Audio Device Found
Ditto Ditto Ditto - I have the same problems -
1. The device manager does not list an audio device under sounds, audio devices.
2. The volume control is greyed out.
3. I get the same “Device Object not found” whenever I try to install drivers.
3. I have the same 5 options listed under sounds, audio devices:
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Video Codecs
Computer information:
Gateway GT5408
Integrated Intel Sigmatel audio
Desktop Board: D945CF - (also know as council bluffs according to gateway)
O/S - WinXP w/ SP2
I have upgraded the Bios, powered down, removed CMOS bat, tried to install numerous drivers (always getting the same “Device object not found”), checked the Bios to be sure sound is enabled, and all the other listed fixes.
In case anyone is looking for XP sigmatel sound drivers, google:
5.10.5208
5.10.0.5034
5.10.4618
5.10.4647.4
Any help would be very much appreciated!

Device Object Not Found Fixed
Success!
First, Thanks to all who contributed before me.
The easy fix was purchasing an external Soundblaster USB sound card (Circuit City $50).
However, here’s what finally worked for me:
The Device Manager did not recognize the on board Sigmatel Sound Card - see Post No. 53 for a description of the problem.
1. Updated the Bios - mine was here:
Intel (Coryville) 945G, Intel (Council Bluffs) 945G Viiv Motherboard BIOS Update Revision:
CF94510J[1].15A.0038
2. Even after powering down, unplugging, removing CMOS battery, holding the power button for 30 sec, leaving off for 20 minutes and rebooting numerous times, my system still did not recognize the integrated Sigmatel Sound card. I couldn’t load any drivers without getting the “Device Object Not Found” error.
3. When adding a slave drive, I unplugged again, powered down, unplugged the power and data cables from all the hard drives. (I also unplugged the DVD/CD Drive which probably didn’t have anything to do with it). Everything was off for about 30 minutes total. When I restarted, the hardware wizard popped up. I then installed the drivers and all is good. The device showed up in “Other Objects”
4. I first tried drivers 5.10.4647.4 which moved the device to “Sound, video and game controllers”. However, sound would not play because” the version installed did not support the board detected”. I then installed 5.10.5208 (kb888111 was already installed). That did it! The USB sound card is going back.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

As far as the sound device goes, you need to uninstall SigmaTel Audio from your computer through the control panel. Once it is uninstalled you need to restart your computer. When it boots back up it should install automatically the right audio driver. It worked for me.

Sound works with XP. not with Vista
I have exactly the same problem (Intel DG956WH with Sigmatel HD Audio). Audio drivers work fine on Win XP, but no Audio device is found under vista. Tried multiple drivers, sometimes partial success, but never really working.
Any ideas?
Greetings,
W.
ps: Just read: Might be a problem with modem drivers, will see about that and report later.
