No Audio Device
I see this is a common issue on this board so I hope you all now know how to resolve this.
I recently reformatted my hard drive & loaded Windows XP on my Laptop. Here is a list of what I have. Gateway System Model: MX6027 BIOS Version: Gateway 61.01 Intel(R) Celeron(R) M processor 1.40GHz Version: x86 Family 6 Model 13 Stepping 8 Speed: 1389 MHz Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Version: 5.1.2600 Service Pack: 2.0 Under the Device Manager it shows that I have the Legacy Audio Drivers. I hope that I have given enough information here. I have seen alot of people say that something in BIOS was disabled but when I restart the computer to enter the BIOS I see no options for the Sound in there. Maybe I am not looking in the right place for this. Thanks for any help you can provide. |

Hi sunspot and welcome to Dev Shed.
In device manager, do you have a yellow exclamation mark next to your sound devices ? Have you tried to update the audio drivers to the latest version ? Also, ensure that the volume is turned up - you'd be surprised how many people actually over look this !

Any yellow question marks or exclamation marks in device manager?
Normally you can get the latest audio drives from Microsoft update and choosing 'Custom' instead of the 'Express' button. From there once it finishes scanning your PC, select the 'Hardware' link on the left hand side. You should see any recommended hardware drivers for your computer. It normally does a decent job of finding uninstalled hardware and finding drivers for those hardware items. You can also go to Gateway's website, go into their product support section, enter your model number and find current drivers. If you have no yellow question marks or exclamation points in device manager, the audio card may not be set as your default audio device (happens a lot in XP Home): 1) Go into Control Panel 2) Select 'Sounds and Audio Devices' 3) Make sure your Legacy Audio device is set to as the default in in most every field. (This may display as Realtek 97 or whatever)

Ok I am alittle closer.
I now have Realtek AC'97 Audio. The problem now is that I have a yellow ! next to it. The error says "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". |

This is directly from MIcrosoft Support:
"Device failed to start. Click Update Driver to update the drivers for this device." Do you have an Internet connection? Did you try updating the driver from my previous post? Try this: 1) Right click on the Realtek AC'97 device in device manager; select and click 'Update Driver' from the window. 2) This should walk you through the Update Driver Wizard. Allow the wizard to connect to the internet to find a suitable driver. 3) Once Installed, reboot. 4) Go back into device manager after the reboot to see if the yellow exclamation point is gone.. ALSO: If you haven't yet, after the reboot, go into 'Control Panel', double click on 'Sounds and Audio Devices' and make sure the fields in nearly all tabs list 'Realtek AC'97' as you default audio and playback device. If if does not, it should be there in the drop down menus. Just select it, and press 'Apply'... Let us know how it goes! Last edited by PWD : February 20th, 2007 at 08:40 AM. |

Yes I have internet connection. When I tried uploading the driver from the Device manager it would say it couldn't locate anything & I tried the manual way but had no luck. When I went to the Gateway site they had these in there. When I went to install them they kept failing. I went to the Realtek site I had better luck that way. Quote:
When I do this it tells me that I have the most current version of the driver & a reboot doesn't help after this. Quote:
I am not home now so I will try this again when I get there but if I remember correct all the drop down boxes are greyed out so I can't touch them. Thanks for trying to help. |

Try un-installing the drivers for your sound device and then re-installing.

As you have more than 5 posts now, you can post URL's. As you had less than 5 when posting it, then it would block them.
