The same problem happened to me. I have a dimension 2300. My sound was working fine until I installed a new hard drive and reinstalled windows XP.

Hi chrisa and welcome to Dev Shed.
As you may have noticed, I have split your post off into it's own thread as it's always better to start a new thread. Anyway, it sounds like a drivers issue to me. Did you re-install the sound drivers once you re-installed XP on the new hard drive ?
