problem with 2 dvd burners installed in same system at same time?

Greetings,

My system currently has a kick *** cd rw and an OK dvd rw (both ATA). I am interested in buying a kick-***, SATA, double layer dvd rw to add as a 3rd drive.

In researching drives, I've come across a user review or 2 stating that the drive they bought and installed didn't work because they already had a dvd rw installed in their system (according to the manufacturer).

I haven't been able to find any more info on this but it really doesn't make any sense to me. Does anybody know of this to be true? and if so, why?

And BTW, anybody have a good reccommendation for a double layer dvd rw (SATA)? The main contender as of right now is http://www.plextor.com/english/products/716SA.htm

It should work. It's the same as having 2 CDROMs. Just set one as a master on one as a slave. Now with the burning program you'll have to select which burner you want to use. Maybe that's why they say it isn't working because you only have 1 burner set as the default.

By the way, what would make you want 2 DVD burners in the first place?

Like cody said, the only problem I have encountered is having to switch burners in the program... shouldn't be a problem.

setting 2 dvd burners

hi cody, can you explain how you would set one as master and one as slave? i connected my 2 dvd burners on the same IDE cable, system detected only one. instead of using 1 cd/dvd rom and 1 dvd burners, i use 2 dvd burners.

Hi ontopofm and welcome to DevShed.

You need to set the jumpers on the back of the drive to master and to slave for your second drive. You might need to refer to the manual that came with your drive to find the correct setting if it isn't displayed on the casing as to what you need to set the jumper 'plug' to.
