Replace fan on my ATI Rage 128Pro with 16VRAM?
Can I replace the fan on my ATI Rage 128Pro with 16VRAM? It is whining and humming loudly and you can watch it spin quickly and then slowly, and then quickly again. I'm in print design and can't afford this to fail. I've got a Mac G4, 450 Mhz, 256 RAM, running OS 9.2. I need to know whether I can replace the fan or if my only alternative is buying a new card. If the latter, I need advice on an equivalent and affordable video card that will run on my machine.

That's almost funny. I too have an ATI Rage card, a 450mHz G4 and 512mb RAM. I thought for a long time that the sick groaning noise coming from my box was a dead animal or the sounds of life evolving. For a long time I've solved the problem with a good set of headphones and iTunes playing real loudly. For some reason I had a rare moment of inspiration and decided to open my box and get to the heart of the problem.
What I thought was a dying cat (or my G4's internal fan) turned out to be the fan on my Rage card. Since it drives a second monitor, and since it is no longer my primary machine I yanked it to take a good look. It appears the fan is screwed on so my guess is that the fan can be replaced, though finding a replacement might not be easy. I'll be making a trip to Fry's Electronics in the next few days and I'll see if they have a fan that might fit and keep you informed. I'm just glad to know there are others that share the same productivity collapsing and mind grating sounds that I've been enjoying! brian fidler URL
