S-Video

I just have a quick question about how S-Video works, I am pretty sure I understand this though. Recently, I asked about interfacing a computer and TV (here). . My question was adequately answered, however I dd not buy the device due to other circumstances. I am not 100% sure is my TV can be connected to by my computer properly so that whatever is occuring on the computer will display on the TV screen. The TV does have a place for an S-Video cable to fit into it. If I buy a video card that supports S-Video, can I connect the S-Video cable from my computer to my TV and expect it to work? If so, how does the TV display things? Would this cause the TV to behave exactly as if it was a monitor (display-wise)?

hooking up a video card with s-video to a tv will display to the tv as if it were a monitor. However, if you're planning on using the tv for watching movies and such off your computer, then it should work fine. If you want to replace your computer monitor with the tv, then you will most likely see a lot of bluriness and a distorted view of icons and such. There are certain types of tvs that you can hook up to an s-video too, to replace your computer monitor, but you would need to research that. Also, keep in mind that for something like this, you may not want to go with a really cheap, generic card. One I would probably recommend would be a radeon

S-Video transmits each color on a separate wire and can thus give you clear picture, but the TV must support S-Video for it to work, most video cards support S-Video and composite (the yellow one that almost everything has, it merges all signals to one wire so you get lower quality), the 6600 that you were looking at supported both, as well as the HDTV ones, if your TV doesn't support S-Video then it almost certainly supports composite as almost all TVs have that


...actually newegg does have the 7300GT, here is an example, i would recommend this over the 6600 as its cheaper and has more features (but runs at a much slower, so no games), it also supports the same outputs as the 6600

I'll see if I can get my money into the bank before that item is no longer there. All my TV needs to support is S-Video and that device you showed on newegg will work fine with my TV?

The interface for that device is: PCI Express x16

I'm not all that experienced hardware-wise, I don't have the money to buy all sorts of things, all I know is that my computer has PCI slots, will this PCI Express x16 fit into one? Or do I need some special type of PCI slot?

PCI express is not PCI, it will not work in a PCI slot, generally any new board that does not have agp will have PCI express instead, unless its a low end board that has onboard video and no expansion slots for a video card

I don't have a single computer in my apartment that is without AGP. I guess I'll find something that works in regular PCI in the meantime. Thanks.
