Go into the BIOS and poke around until you find a setting to disable the onboard sound.
There is also a setting under audio to choose the audio device. Under XP I had a choice of my sound card or the on board sound. Even choosing my sound card here didn't work. I had to disable the onboard sound in the BIOS.
