Try reinstalling your sound drivers. I have problems like that all the time, usually reinstalling the sound drivers, or doing a system restore, makes them work.

Intel 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio Controller

then went to 'Add Hardware' and XP deteced this device again and installed it from scratch.

Is there still a yellow exclamation next to the device in Device Manager? Or was that part taken care of after reinstalling the driver?

Is this an onboard sound card that's not working, or a PCI type card that's not working?

How long has this problem been occurring? As of recent, or since you first tried?

The more info you give, the more we can help you out.

-in device manager, there is about 7 entries (no yellow exclamation mark) in the "sound, video, and game controllers", there is yello exclamation mark on "other devices", and one level under that there is a yellow exlamation mark next to "Multimedia Audio Controller".

-is a PCI card.

-hasn't been working as far as I know

Find out the card make/model and install the correct drivers for it.
