You might need to partition it first to remove the write protection I think. Been a while since I come across one protected without a switch.

Here is what to do if you are prepared to lose your info ....

Shut down the PC, rebooted press F8 to go to Safe Mode.
Start -> Run
Type in CMD, hit OK.
Type in format ?: (? is the drive letter) and hit enter.
Let it go to 100% and then shut down.
Reboot normally and you have your key back.

Hope that helps !!

I thought you couldn't format it ??

No matter, glad you got it sorted. And thanks for posting what you did to solve the problem.

Better yet, delete the partition and re-partition. (assuming xp/2k3 for these instructions)

Control panels
Administrative tools
disk management
delete the partition for the key (you will likely get a warning about it being in use, just ok through that)
right click in the now empty space on the key, and click new partition
partition to taste

This is better then a format if you have the key behaving strangely, as it will recreate the entire file system structure for they key, instead of just telling it there are no files in it.
