Video Card Recommend??

I believe that my latest video card has burned out on me. I had an ATI 9800. My power supply went out, I had both my video card and my old power supply pulled out of the case to have them inspected. Although, I never had a chance to take them in. Forked out the money to buy a new PSU and put the video card back in and all is running fine. Well, except when I go to play a video game. Where as the PC will freeze once I load up a game and the graphics start to run. It plays DVD's, has no problems with the desktop, etc.. just when I go to play a video game with detailed graphics does the PC freeze.
My question is:
Being that I had the ATI 9800 video card.
Is there a video card that is recommended that will be comparable or maybe even better with a budget price of around $100? Being that I just got married my funds are now strapped.
I've looked into the ATI's and the NVidia cards. It gets confusing with which one's are "higher" on the tree then others.. example, is the ATI X300 better or worse than the ATI 9800? I haven't used an NVidia card since owning the 5200. Any help or recommendation would be great. Thanks.

HI Ruffus999 and welcome to Dev Shed.

What connection do you have on your motherboard ? Is it PCI, AGP or PCI-E ?

The only two connections I have at this time is the AGP and standard PCI slots. Not the Express. The current video card that I have is AGP. ATI's 9800.

Cards that I am currently looking at is:
ATI X1300
ATI X600

I'm not sure what is good in regards to NVidia.
And I'm not sure if either of these cards listed are as good as the ATI 9800 was. I would think that the X series would be better only due to them coming out after the 9000 ATI series.
But like I said, I'm really looking for a comparable card to the 9800 or better and still be able to stay around $100.
The ATI's I listed about looked to be around $120. I'm not looking to downgrade in my video card.
There are a few titles coming out soon (Total War 2, Company of Heroes, etc.) that I'm looking to get but if I downgrade I'm afraid that it Will have terrible frame rates at normal to high settings, etc.

Out of those 2 cards that you mentioned, I would probably go for the ATI X600.
