Yes actually... It's simple and your speakers aren't busted or junky just for that. The volume knob is actually a variable resistor (turning to the left increases resistance on the current, turning to the right decreases it.) So the reason why you still hear a bit of muffled music is probably because :
1 - That variable resistor was a lemon and slightly off spec therefore not being of a high enough resistance value.
2 - The speaker might of been assembled with the resistor/knob glued kinda crooked so even thought it seems your knob is all the way to the left it actually isn't.
