x8 AGP on a x4 port.
Will it work? I'm guessing it will since most things are backwards compatible.

Most likely yes. Cards are usually 8x/4x. That is ideal though, so just because it "should" doesn't mean it 100% "will". It won't hurt anything to try though, and will very likelyl work.
