I just had mySQL installed by the webhosting company on my dedicated server.
I need some basic help.
First of all, how do I create a new database and how do I set user name and password for it?
Do I need to telnet as root in order to setup new table or just as any user? I read that it is not a good idea to setup database as root because it will then run with the root ID and root privileges.
Any help is appreciated.

set you password this is done with:
/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password 'new-password'
See the manual for more instructions.
CREATE DATABASE fred;
will create a database named fred
to use this databas type u fred
then create tables (CREATE TABLE name etc.. using SQL commands - best to connect to you database using user instead of root.
you can do all of this without being root
