Compare MySql Db Schema
Hi there,
I am looking for a tool to compare schema s of two different dbs. I want to compare them on local host - apache on my local disk , I am running mysql 5.1. I have tried downloading tools like dbdif but I have no idea how to install them because I think they need to be installed with other oracle products and on servers.
What would be ideal is if there is a tool with which I could just upload the two different .sql dump files or is that not something that is usually done? Anyway please give me your suggestions, I am a php programmer who basically knows enough to get by and I rarely have to delve deeper into mysql than simple db calls so I'm asking the experts.
I also have another question about editing a database locally. I s there a good tool to edit a mysql database locally without too much configuration hassle. All I want to do is download a dump-file from my e-commerce store. make amendments to it and then save it and upload it again.

Thanks for your reply. Yes I have seen that tool, it's def an option. Maybe you can answer another question. The reason I want to edit locally is that I have a HUGE catalog of products for my e-commerce store.
Is it unusual to want to edit locally? It is the initial upload that makes me want to do this because one the catalog is online I will just be making small amendments.

Not free, but I'm a bit of a fan of Navicat for GUI style DB editing. There was a free 'lite' version, but I cant seem to locate it any more.
Either way, the light version didn't do structure and data comparisons the way the full version does.
It also does a bunch of other vaguely useful things, but I'll leave it up to you to research it.
The other method you mention, comparing dump files, is also a possibility. For this I'd recommend Beyond Compare. Again, not free, but it'll compare pretty much anything you want in a very clear and easy to use way.
You could also look at something web based hosted locally (given you run apache on your machine). phpMyAdmin is a popular one if you haven't seen it before, though odds are good it was preinstalled if you used a bundled kit like wamp etc.
