    Expiration date question

I searched and saw several references to CRON but I don't know what that is. Yes, I'm a noob.

I have an expiration date field that I need to trigger when that date arrives.

My preference is to have an automatic event: The data from one field (we'll call it active) gets copied to another field (inactive) and deleted from the active.

Not so preferred: I get an email reminder telling me John Doe's subscription has expired and I go in and perform above actions manually.

I'm guessing (with my luck and intense desire to not ever have to learn another thing in my lifetime) I'm going to have to go down a road with at least 2 learning curves.
So is it possible? And if it requires this CRON thing I'd appreciate a CRON for dummies link.

    TIA
