linking Mysql C API in Linux

Hello there,

I have a C program I would like to compile using the mysql client API. Which is the best Mysql package to install which has everything?.

And also how do I link everything??.

I have installed mysql before but am starting fresh, I just can not get it to link the -lmysqlclient when I compile my program.
