This problem has been asked over several times here, but having waded thru archives I am unable to get enough info for a thickie like me to sort it out.

    MySql on Win98 with PWS.
MySql is installed as per instructions but attempting to create database, or do anything in fact, generates the :
Can't connect to MySql server on 'localhost' (10050). in the dos window.

    Can anyone help?

This will sound stupid if you did it, but did you start the mysql daemon (mysqld) first? See mysql is simply a client that needs to connect to the database server mysqld which processes your requests, so it needs to be running for you to do anything.

    How dumb do I feel..?

It's always the simple answers that get the results.
    Thank you :-)
