    Hello all you MySQL experts out there!

    I am very very new to MySQL. The installation of MySQL was successful, and I have set a password for root using the command: ./mysqladmin -u root password examplepw

    Now my question is: How do I undo that command? I don't want root to have a password. Just like the default for the installation. I've looked around but couldn't find the answer.

    I am learning MySQL so security is not an issue now. Thanks in advance.

    Log into the mysql command prompt (
    mysql -uroot -p
    and type :-
    use mysql;
    UPDATE user SET Password='' WHERE User='root';
    flush privileges;

    Make sure you get the case right! The User and user are different as is Password and password

    And it should reset the root password

    Thanks a million Darren!

    Boy, that's more involved than I thought. Your suggestion worked on first tried.

    Glad I could help.

    We ended up setting up a system that allows our users to overwrite their root password as so many forgot it after they changed it.

    Good luck with your quest with MySQL
