    how can i search within the results of a sql query?

    In MySQL, you'll have to do this through application logic. Grab your results in a Perl script (or whatever else takes your fancy), and then search through them. If you have access to a database which supports sub-selects then you can do it all in the DB, but as this is posted to a MySQL group I imagine you probably have MySQL. Hopefully at some point in the near future MySQL will add support for sub-select's (it's on the ToDo list).
