    Please could someone let me know how I can backup a complete MySQL database, and restore it afterwards. We are running on Linux. Thanks...

    i think you should use the mysqldump program for a full backup of your database:

    shell> mysqldump --tab=/path/to/some/dir --opt --full

    see the mysql-manual for the database back up details.
