Greek and English for chemical names
Hi all, I'm very new to MySQL and PHP. We need to create a database that holds scientific info on chemicals including name and spectral data (can contain Greek characters in addition to English). For example: β-Ergocryptam.
Can we use Hex (α) or Decimal (α) for the Greek beta character?
We will manually enter the info into the database and will need to retrieve info using PHP.
Thanks in advance.

The database will allow you to enter the characters α and α into a field.
If you're asking whether MySQL or PHP will understand those sequences of characters as the letter β, the answer is no, they won't. As a consequence, if you were trying to do something like search for all chemicals that started with a β, you would not find any.
However, if you display that sequence of characters in a web browser that processes HTML it will show the special character.

We do want the user to be able to search by the chemical name. How can this be done?

Just enter the letter β and make sure you're using utf-8 encoding for everything.
