I understand there's no automatic way to display two columns in a dropdownlist.
Does anyone know how to create one? I'm still learning vb.net and would really appreciate any help.

Not sure if you're looking for something free or not, but there are a few free options as you metioned such as the AJAX combobox along with JQuerys autocomplete. There are some good paid custom controls such as Telerik . I've also created a combobox custom search control that I wrote for .Net developers. Just do a search for ASPSuperSearchBox , but it does requires a license.
Let me know if you have any questions,
