Back end technology: MVC4, WebAPI, WCF, or other?

To write a modern well structured slick HTML5 app (and I mean a desktop app for enterprise), which kind of technology would you suggest is a good one to look at for a newbie?

At work we want to out together a couple of simple web based apps, like a tool to monitor various systems and processes, grep log files, kick start a job. We have experience in desktop technology like win forms and wpf but not web, and its something we want to look into now.

ASP.net MVC seems well established but while 4 is new, we're worried (in our ignorance) that it might not be so up to date anymore - is this a concern out there amongst other devs?
If you could start a new project with any Microsoft technology stack that gives you the best flexibility for the future, which tech choices would you make?

    MVC for everything

    Nothing beats its flexibility.

    Thanks,
