150-200M run on CAT5...any suggestion?? (more)
I'm currently helping put in a long distance network run. The cables are already run underground. They(2 CAT5 cables) are running from the house to a boat/rec house approx 150-200 meters away, so the homeowner has access to the network/internet while lounging. Does anyone here have any recomendations on how to get the best signal through these wires? Putting in a repeater halfway down the run is not really an option, as it is in the middle of the lawn. I was thinking of putting a repeater in right at the end of the run before making any connections to any computers or routers, etc. Any thoughts at all would be appreciated.
Thanks |

The maximum length for Cat-5 cabling without repeater is supposed to be 100 metres according to the specifications. In real life, I've found that you can go a little bit over this limit (about 110 or 115 metres) without losing too much of the signal. This was with 10Mb cards though and I have no idea how much it drops once you go past this length

10Mb half duplex is more forgiving than 100Mb on the cabling length which is why you got the longer run. However, I doubt you will even get a link light at 150-200 meters. My recomendation is fiber optic SX or wireless ( 1 access point in house and a repeater in the rec house) with signal booster.

Or perhaps a wireless network utilising a Pringles Cantenna or a Yuban Coffee Can. See http://www.turnpoint.net/wireless/has.html for a performance comparision.
