2 Nic Cards... 2 separate connections... How?!?

Hi all... I tried searching the forums but cannot find specific answer... I am not a pro at networking but familiar with setting up simple networks... I have this problem if some1 could kindly help...

Purpose/Problem:

I live in a college dorm and would like to connect to my roomate's computer via a router. We both have separate ethernet lines and don't want to share that line. My PC has 2 NIC cards, when connected to the router it drops the direct ethernet connection and assumes the one on the router.

Setup:

1st PC has 2 NIC cards installed. One nic card is connected to a direct ethernet line with internet connections (DHCP) and the other nic is connected to a Linksys Router (Static connection) with internal IP as 192.168.1.20.

2nd PC has a single NIC card that is connected to the same Linksys Router with internal IP of 192.168.1.7...

Linksys Router is connected to a second ethernet line with a diff IP than the first line. Router IP is 192.168.1.1 and DHCP is disabled.

Both PC's operating under WIN XP.

As stated above... when I enabled the Lan connection on the first PC to router... it automatically drops the direct connection and assumes the connection to the router... What I want to be able to do is to share files and folders across the network between the 2 PC's but at the same time have 2 separate Internet connections that are not shared.

Thank you in advance...

Kab

Okay I figured it out... i kinda thought about it but didn't think it would work.

In the Linksys router filter out the IP of the 2nd NIC card in the first PC, the one going to the router (duh). Whats gonna happen is both internet connections will not work. When you renable the IP again to the NIC card... this time there will be internet (direct ethernet) connection instead of thru the router... filter out the ip again in router settings... reboot PC... Now everything is perfect.

Kab...

I head that in Win 2k3 Server... this is easilly configured... for example if u have 3 NIC cards or ethernet conenctions u can point Mozilla to one, IE to another, Opera to a third... etc each using its own connection...

I have a new problem with this configuration.

I dunno if there is something I did wrong but here is the situation.

The first and the second PC now connect to separate internet connections fine. The second pc (the one behind the router that uses the routers direct connect to the ethernet connection) is able to browse shared folders/drives on the first PC. The first PC however, is unable to view files shared on the second PC. Not only that it takes a while when I goto Neighborhood Networking to even look for my workgroup... in addition I am able to see other workgroups of other ppl in the same building and sometimes able to browse some of their shared data.

First how am I able to see the shared folders/drives on the second PC from the first PC. When I try to access it says I do not have permission. Second how do I prevent other users in the building from seeing my personal workgroup.

What I think is happening is that the first pc (which has 2 NIC cards) is having a conflict with the LAN and WAN. I pinged both internal and external IPs and they ping fine. Its really frusterating as I have not found a solution anywhere on the net. Please help!
