A can see/read A & B, but B cannot see/read A or B (?). Please help! (xp pro)
Hi everyone,
I have two home computers, both on XP professional SP1, I’ve been trying to get to work together for a while now. The first, “MEL,” seems to be functioning perfectly. The second, “ET,” isn’t behaving at all and I’m not sure why. Internet connection firewall is not on for LAN on either. They’re both on ‘Workgroup’. I have them connected via a 10/100 Ethernet Switch, into which a DSL modem is also plugged. They share Internet perfectly and I don’t have any reason to believe the switch is the problem. I have Norton Personal Firewall configured for LAN on ET, but I had it disabled for all tests. Here's what I've got. ________________________________ XP NETWORKING: ============================ - ‘View workgroup computers’ on MEL shows shared files/printers from both computers. On ET, nothing shows up (not even itself). - MEL can read ET’s shared files/printers perfectly. It can access ET just the way it’s supposed to. ET, however, cannot read MEL’s shared files/printers (can’t see them). ________________________________ IPCONFIG /ALL ============================ Code:

________________________________ PINGING: ============================ I've run the same 6 pings on each computer. The only ping that doesn’t work is when MEL tries to ping ET by name. I get a ‘could not find host ET’ error. I find this very strange. (What’s the deal with localhost having the same IP on both computers but not name? Is that normal?) Code:
*ON MEL: 1a) ‘Ping localhost’ gives ‘pinging MEL [127.0.0.1]’ successfully. 1b) ‘Ping 127.0.0.1’ gives ‘pinging 127.0.0.1’ successfully. 2a) ‘Ping MEL’ gives ‘pinging 169.254.118.227’ successfully. 2b) ‘Ping 169.254.118.227’ gives ‘pinging 169.254.118.227’ successfully. 3a*) ‘Ping ET’ gives ‘ping request could not find host ET. Please check the name and try again.’ 3b) ‘Ping 169.254.225.66’ gives ‘pinging 169.254.225.66’ successfully. Code:
*ON ET: 1a) ‘Ping localhost’ gives ‘pinging ET [127.0.0.1]’ successfully. 1b) ‘Ping 127.0.0.1’ gives ‘pinging 127.0.0.1’ successfully. 2a) ‘Ping MEL’ gives ‘pinging 169.254.118.227’ successfully. 2b) ‘Ping 169.254.118.227’ gives ‘pinging 169.254.118.227’ successfully. 3a) ‘Ping ET’ gives ‘pinging ET [169.254.225.66]’ successfully. 3b) ‘Ping 169.254.225.66’ gives ‘pinging 169.254.225.66’ successfully. ________________________________ HELP, PLEASE! ============================ I had a third computer hooked up to the network once, and even with it's Norton Firewall active it worked perfectly with MEL. It could also take ET’s files, like MEL can, but ET couldn’t see it and it couldn’t ping ET by name (same as MEL). Given that, I'm guessing the problem is with something fundamental to the LAN/XP settings of ET, but I have absolutely no idea how so. Someone in another query I made about this elsewhere suggested I try using a router instead of my switch and disable Internet Connection Sharing, but I'm not sure if that will actually help given that the switch has proven it can work for what I want it to. I’d just try wiping XP and starting from scratch on the ET machine, but it’s my primary system and that’s not something I really want to consider if there’s a way around this. Does anyone have any ideas why this computer is behaving the way it is? I’ll check this thread frequently and will provide any other information you might need. Thanks for your time, I very much appreciate it. Mike |

Do u have a firewall running on MEL that is preventing ET from seeing/connecting with MEL? If u have firewalls running, suggest you add the IP address of each PC to the other PCs "trusted zone" in the firewall program - this worked for me using Zonealarm firewall.
Another option is possibly changing the "restrictanonymous" dword from 1 to 0 in regedit (run>>regedit>> find "restrictanonymous" and set to 0 vs 1 - there are some other threads that spell out the detail - some say u need to set "restrictanonymousSAM" to 0 as well - I did this and it still did not work - only when I configured both firewalls to recognise and "trust" the other PCs IP address that it worked - now both can see and share files and printers off each other. - good luck |
