Accessing password protected folder in XP
OK, this is very flustrating. I think the issue has something to do w/ guest appearing. Anyhow, I have two computers on a wireless router. 1 winxpSP1 and the other win98se. I am able to surf internet fine on both machine and share files back and forth BUT... confusingly I can NOT access a folder from my winXP machine that is password protected in win98! I get the log in password dialog when I click on the folder in winxp and a GREYED out user name that has a default name/guest in it. When I try to enter a password in the dialog box the machine seems to NOT acknowledge the OK button after typing. Not sure if its because password is not accepted or another problem. One thing I think is that win98 has no known guest account and that's not who's logged on. SO PLEASE can someone help me w/ this irretating problem! TIA

Ok, I figured something out... If I map a network drive to the shared folder on the Win98 machine and click to log in as a differnet user, and enter the username as the pc log in account of win98se it will allow me to access the win98 password protected share in winXP. My questions are, "Why is it that WinXPpro is greying out the username on a default log in and not allowing me to type a username w/o using a mapped drive?" and "Isn't there some setting in WinXP to make it not default to any username when logging into a password protected folder??" I can live w/ mapping the folder but seems kinda stupid to MUST do that.

On both computers, use accounts with exactly the same username/password, otherwise you'll have problems authenticating.
