i have got a windows 2003 server and a windows 2000 server an i was woundering if there was a way to link both active directories together so that users can login to both servers and dont have to have diffrent usernames and passwords. I would also like the windows 2003 server to be the piramy server (or main server) if that is possiable. i dont know a lot about servers so if you could explain it step by step to make it easer to understand thanks a lot. On the Windows 2003 Server, open up the Manager Your Server wizard. Click Add a Role and select Domain Controller (active Directory). Follow the instructions on screen to create your domain (if at any time you are prompted to set up DNS automatically, select this option). After the server has completed, reboot your computer to finish the domain setup.
Afterwards, on the Windows 2000 Server computer, right-click My Computer on the desktop and select Properties. On the Computer Name tab click the Change button and select Domain. Enter in the domain name that you created in the wizard on the 2003 computer. It should then prompt you for a domain username and password. Enter this and reboot, then you should be presented with the logon screen. As logon as the correct domain is selected in the drop-down list, you can logon with the accounts from the Windows 2003 comptuer. HTH, Edwin |

If you have set up a Windows 2003 Active Directory domain, and then on the Windows 2000 Server computer added it to the domain from the System applet in the control panel, you should be able to access it OK.
Once the computers are on a domain (which both of them are), all authentication is handled by the domain controller (the 2003 machine). When you try to access something on the 2000 computer, you should be authenticated by the 2003 domain controller, and have access to the resource. Some things to check though: 1. Make sure your username and password on your workgroup computer match exactly the username and password within the 2003 domain controller. 2. On the Windows 2000 computer which is attached to the domain, make sure that you have permission to access the resource. If, for example, you are trying to access a shared folder by going to \\win2000server\myshare the folder myshare on the 2000 server must have the correct permissions. Right-click the folder, select Properties and click the Security tab. Click the Add button and add your own user account so that an entry such as DomainName\Username appears in the list and has read (or write) access. 3. On the Windows 2000 computer, open up Local Security Policy from the Administrative Tools. Expand Local Policy and User Rights Assignment. In the option at the top, Access this computer from the network, make sure that the everyone group is included. HTH, Edwin |
