adsl modem w/ switch or hub

Hi I´m building this network and I would like to know if I can just have a plain bridge type connection modem on a switch directly and make a PAP connection (authentication) throw the switch or do I need router modem?

The easiest is a router modem, but what about a plain modem on a switch? Just cross over cables?

Peace

Modem implies interent access from the network. Unless you are paying your ISP for multiple ip addresses the reason everyone puts in a router is to have multiple machines access the internet using a single ISP provided ip address. You can not do this with a switch.

I got it up and working, I did a upgrade on firmware of my speedstream 5200 and became a router and plugged in the switch with a crossover cable. Fast internet for everyone (not that fast).

Wonder if I can make a internal proxy for a specific site like www.linux.com I want it to point to a certain machine in my lan, almost like a filter type of thing. (for linux server on windows and linux clients)

Thanks for the contribution.

Peace,
Ramon
