Another Win 98 & XP networking thread

Hey, I have 3 computers: two 98 boxes and one XP box. The 98s are networked fine, they both see and ping each other, but neither of them can ping or see the XP box. The XP box can see the 98 boxes, but it can't ping them.

Any ideas what's going on?

Do you have any firewalls enabled? Also check for the built-in Internet Connection Firewall. In Network Connections in the Control Panel right-click your network connection. Select Properties and click the Advanced tab, and check that ICF is disabled.

Do you have any anti-virus software on the XP computer? Some of these include firewalls.

Are the IP addresses set correctly? They should all be on the same subnet (for example 192.168.0.x) with the subnet mask set to 255.255.255.0.

I would work on resolving the no-pinging problem first. If you can't ping, nothing else is going to work no matter what you do.

So, in addition to the IP addresses, can you double check the subnets and default gateways on all the PCs? Can they all ping their own IP address? If so, the next thing I'd start looking at is cabling. Also try switching around which PC is plugged into which ports on your hub, there could be a bad port.
