ARGH cant fileshare between XP and 98, have done EVERYTHING

IM GETTIN REALLY PI$$ED ABout this it seems that ive absolutely tried everything, and i still cant get the 98 to connect to the xp, what ive done so far is made an account on the xp machine with the exact same username/pass on 98 machine, i have enabled the guest account with NO password. Im pretty sure that ive set up everything perfectly with the connections.

On win 98 i made sure file sharing is enabled. The primary login is Client for Microsoft Networks. Ive binded it with Client for microsoft networks and File and printer sharing for microsoft networks and i enabled NetBios over TCP/IP

On win XP i did the above, and made sure i enabled netbios over TCP/IP

PLEASE HELP im goin CRAZY

Is it 98 or 98 SE? Also, was this a 95 machine that was upgraded to 98 at some point? I can't give you the why's and wherefors, but I've run into similar problems in the past and found that upgrading to Second Edition helped. Of course, if you already ahve SE on there, then you're just more Pi$$ed. :?)

Guest account doesn't matter if you have the same account and password on both. Disable the guest account if you are doing any kind of internet connection.

Problem is not OS related.

Start with the basics. Go to a cmd prompt on xp and type ipconfig. Write down the ip address and subnet mask. Go to the 98 pc and go to RUN and type winipcfg. Write down the ip address.
Can you ping from 98 to xp? Can you ping from xp to 98?

Odds are you can ping from xp to 98 but not the other way. XP sp2 has a builtin firewall. Disable it to test if its what is blocking your connectivity. If you have Zonealarm loaded on either disable it for testing. Once you can ping between in either direction learn to properly configure the firewalls so your local net is trusted.

Both machines need to be in the same workgroup.
Both have to have file and print sharing enabled.
Both need to have something shared with no restrictions
Use only tcp/ip on both.

Now see if you can see the pcs in network neighborhood.

Post back where you have problems in these steps.
