Ask before dialling up
over a lan the internet starts dialing on a remote computer sometimes for no reason at all. Is there any way of controlling a shared 56 KB connection so that i choose when to dial up. Or at least i am asked before a connection is started.

uninitiated internet access is the sign of a worm. Scan your station for virus's/worms/hackware/spyware.
Their is a setting in IE/tools/internet options/connetions/dialup-vpn connections to never dial a connection. You have to do it manually. |

Also, if you're sharing the connection out over a network, I seem to remember that there is an option to automatically dial-up when clients connect. Try disabling this.

I have already diabled it from inside IE but that only effects IE from dialling up i will try scanning for spyware but i still only want it to connect when the client specificly clicks connect. Surely microsoft has included an opiton to prevent a modem connection from dialling automatically.
I have been advised from the microsoft site to disable a service called remote connection manager or somwthing with no sucess. Last edited by andypa1 : May 20th, 2004 at 07:00 AM. |

On the computer where you've got the dial-up connection, open the properties and click the Advanced tab (I think). Here, there should be an option to share the Internet to other computers on the network. Isn't there an option to also automatically dial-up the connection when clients connect?

won't this stop the clients from connecting completely. I still want to be able to connect remotely but not every 32 minutes like it is at the moment

Aren't there two separate options? One to enable sharing of the connection, and one to enable it to connect automatically when clients are connected? As long as the Internet connection still has the option to be shared, clients should still be able to access the Internet.
