Cable modem/ router probs.

I need some help here! I have a cable modem that is working and I have a netgear rt-314 router that was working with the DSL system that I had in a defferent state. I am now hooked up with Cable and the Router wil not work. Every time I connect the router the modem stops at the router and will not go to the computer.
