Can access Jet Direct with appletalk but not TCP/IP

I'm trying to set up my home network. My new Airport Extreme Base
Station uses DHCP to give addresses like 10.0.1.xxx
instead of 192.168.1.xxx like the bellsouth DSL modem I was using as a
router on the northshore.
The airport has three ethernet ports and one USB. I plugged my color
printer into the USB slot, and any laptop can find it as long as it is
a mac or has bonjour installed. I have my PC hardwired into one of the
ethernet ports and installed Bonjour on it so it can find the color
printer. The PC desktop and my mac laptop pick up dhcp addresses and
can ping each other.

I plugged my black and white laserjet printer into one of the ethernet
ports on the Airport. My old jetdirect card on my laser printer
apparently does not support DHCP, it has an older protocol called
BOOTP.
I changed the subnet mask, IP address and gateway address to be
consistent with the rest of the network.
I gave it a fixed IP address of 10.0.1.255 but I can't ping it or
install it on the PC with a TCP/IP port the way I did on my old
network. Weirdly enough, my laptop picked it up as an appletalk
printer and I can print to it from my mac laptop wirelessly, so I know
the connection is good, but I can't access it using TCP/IP.

Any advice?

10.0.1.255 is a broadcast address, try switching it to 10.0.1.253; or something outside the DHCP scope the Airport is handing out.

it worked

Switching it to 10.0.1.253 worked. 192.168.1.255 worked in my old network, I guess it had a different subnet mask.

Thank you.
