Can I share internet on XP using a NIC??

Hi!

I have two laptops that were previously connected using a switch and the network connection was shared fine (it was a DSL modem).

Now, I have a new broadband connection that connects directly to laptop A that has two NICs. One is for the internet and the other goes to the switch where laptop B also connects.

But I do not seem to be able to get internet sharing to work.

Must I use a router?! I hope not......

Help

Thanks

Ari

On the XP computer which has the two NICs and the Internet Connection, open up Network Connections from the Control Panel. Right-click the Internet connection and select Properties. Click the Advanced tab and enable Internet Connection Sharing. This should enable the Internet connection to be shared from this computer.

Then, on the second computer, open up Network Connections from the Control Panel and right-click the Local Area Connection. Select Properties and double click Internet Protocol TCP/IP. In the Default Gateway part, enter the IP address of the computer with the Internet Connection. THis should get your connection working.

If it still doesn't work from the other computer, can you try accessing http://66.102.9.99 ? If you can access that, but can't access http://www.google.com , there is a DNS problem which we can solve.

Hey edwinbrains, thanks. I will try that, even thought I already did and it didn't work.
In reading the various forums about ICS, I am under the impression that sharing a LAN/NIC connection is not possible and that only modem/dsl/cable connections can be shared (i.e. in my situration you would need a router).

Here is the configuration of my network:

- Laptop A
- NIC A1
IP: 10.69.1.229
Subnet: 255.255.0.0
Gateway: 10.69.0.1
(My ISP provides a ethernet connection)

- NIC A2
IP: 192.168.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0

- Laptop B
- NIC B
IP: 192.168.0.100
Subnet: 255.255.0.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1

I am able to ping NIC A2 from NIC B but no net access.

Help....

Thanks!

Firstly, on the laptop B, change the subnet from 255.255.0.0 to 255.255.255.0.

In your situation, you definitely should be able to use ICS, and not have to buy a router. On the laptop A, you've got two NICs - one to the Internet and one to the local network. Enabling ICS on the Internet connection, should all it to be shared through all other computers in the network.

Can you try going to your ISPs website, and finding their list of DNS servers? They should have two DNS servers, which you can use to resolve domain names to IP addresses. Find these, then enter them into laptop B. There's a section just below the IP address, subnet mask and gateway where you can enter the DNS servers of your ISP. Then try accessing the Internet again.

If it still doesn't work can you try clicking Start, Run and type cmd. In the Command Prompt type "ping 66.102.9.99" (without the quotes) and see if you get a reply. Do this on both computers.

Still not working....

It's still not working.....
The subnet on B was a typo. It is indeed 255.255.255.0
But I am unable to ping any "real" IP address from B even though I have entered the DNS servers. By the way, laptop B is running Win98 2nd Edition.

Ideas?

Is the Internet working fine on the first computer?

Can you ping between the two computers internally on the local network?

Are there any firewalls running (including things like ZoneAlarm and Internet Connection Firewall - built in to Windows XP)?

Umm..... problem solved.....

Feel kinda goofy but problem was solved...... yes, indeed, it was the DNS servers. BUT, not where you would expect! I had to enter them in the definitions for A2 also.....

Thanks for your help!
