You have two choices. You can either connect the computers directly using a crossover cable, or connect them via a hub using straight-through (or patch) cables. Both of these setups should be the same, as long as you check that you're using the correct wires. |

In XP to change the username/password open the Control Panel and select User Accounts. Then, you can either create a new account with a different username/password or change the password for your current account.

The 25m cable is no problem I don't think - they can be up to 100m in length as a maximum.
For the logon thing, I don't think this needs changing. I don't think you have the same options as you do in Windows 98. |

Check that the computers have the IP addresses in the 192.168.0.x subnet. Then see if you can ping from one to the other. If you can't, and you're sure that the IP addresses are set correctly, then they may not be connected properly. Check the NICs and cables. See if you test them elsewhere.

Open My Computer, click Tools, Folder Options and click the View tab. At the bottom, make sure that Use simple file sharing is not enabled (it must be unticked).

No, i have unticked the simple sharing file, but it come out the same result.
Now, 2 pc ip address is : 1. 192.168.0.1 2. automatically or assign manually(192.168.0.10) (both dont work) Both pc can ping each other, but can not see each other in LAN. But, when i change both pc ip address to: 1. obtain ip add automatically (169.254.132.243) 2. obtain ip add automatically (169.254.169.230) then, Both pc can ping each other, and can see each other in LAN. But, t is not accessable... it come out a dialog say : "....no permission to access.... contact to the adminstrator......" Just like my last 2 post. Last time, when the 2 pc can not ping each other, i try to play a TCP/IP, both pc can host a game, but can not join to hosted game. Now, both pc can ping each other. But, both pc become can not even host a game. And, now what is your opinion on it ? Thanks for your further help. ![]() |

You don't want to be using addresses like 169.254.169.230. Do you have a DHCP server running on the network? You'll have one if you are using Internet Connection Sharing. If you don't have one, then there is nothing that the computers can contact to obtain an IP address, so they allocate themselves one automatically. In this case, you're best to set the addresses manually to an address in the 192.168.0.x subnet, with the subnet mask set to 255.255.255.0.
Are you sure that you haven't got any firewalls on the computers, including the built-in XP Internet Connection Firewall? |

Hi,
the built-in XP Internet Connection Firewall is in LAN property - Advanced tab and un-tick the box, right? or i need to set it in some other place? How about the internet connection setting? i disable both ICF too. i didn't use both pc for online, just want to use for LAN. if i assign the ip address for 192.168.0.x , then i even cant see each other's pc name in My Networks Place. is no other setting to change for this ? |
