Can not link 2 pc in window XP

Hi everyone,
i have been facing this problem for few months. i have read this " Sticky: Common networking problems - please read first"
i follow the step, but at last i can't ping other pc.

i think i just simply list out what i have done:

1.i have used a crossover cable.

2. i have properly install the net card's drivers for window XP. it shown in device manager.

3. the icon of LAN Connection shown the connection is enable, and once start up window, it start counting the 'time' of connection.

4. i can not see the other pc's files in Network Connection, there only show the pc's own files.

5. i have try the window's Help, troubleshootings a lot of times, but not works.

6. By using command, both pc can Ping 127.0.0.1 , results show okay, 0% loss.
But, when Ping 10.0.0.25 , the results show 100% loss. WHAT SETTING SHOULD I DO ??

7. i have set diferent name for each pc, but same name for workgroup.

8. the ip address for pc1 is 192.168.0.1 and for pc2 is 192.168.0.2 . the subnet mask is set to 255.255.255.0. for both.
i didnot use internet for both pc.

Any else setting i should do?

Thanks for help.

Can you click Start, Run and type "ipconfig /all > C:\ipconfig.txt" (without the quotes). A black screen will flash up. When it disappears, open up My Computer and browse to the hard drive. Find the file ipconfig.txt in the root of the C drive. Copy the contents into your next post. Repeat this for the other computer.

If you've read the sticky, I presume that you've disabled the firewalls, including the built-in XP Internet Connection Firewall.

Try opening the Command Prompt first. Click Start, Run and type cmd. The Command Prompt will open. Then try typing in ipconfig /all in at the prompt, and you should get info about your network connections. Then try ipconfig /all > C:\ipconfig.txt. That should produce a text file. If it doesn't, you could just take a screenshot of ipconfig /all.

Why are you pinging 10.0.0.25? The computer's have the IP addresses 192.168.0.1 and 2. Try pinging these two addresses from the command prompt.

in the settings for the computer that currently has IP 192.168.0.2 change it to automatically obtain IP address, should solve your problem.

I shouldn't think that the auto setting will work unless you've got a DHCP server on your network. You'll get the address like 192.254.28.86 again.

One thing I think you should try would be to remove the DNS server address from the network settings. I doubt you're actually running a DNS server on the first computer, so remove it from the network confiig in both computers.

Have you checked if the firewalls are disabled? Check also that the XP built-in firewall Internet Connection Firewall is disabled.

Oh, it doesny works too...

yes, the XP built-in firewall Internet Connection Firewall is disabled. i dont have any ICF software in the pc.

DNS server? ok, i will disable it.

Is any problem for the pc2 about the Node Type : unknow ?
But for pc1 is Node Type : Broadcast

I just cant understand WHY the status of connection is showing enable and counting time of connection, but it still NOT connected? Do u know how to explain this ?

Ya, one more thing. before i change these 2 pc to win XP, they r win 98. The pc2 (win98) when i assign its ip address as 192.168.0.2, but when i try to play a TCP/IP game like Diablo2, it show its ip address as 3.0.0.3. That's ODD !!!
That' why i change both pc to win XP..... but still cant work!!

You're connecting the two computers directly. Can you just check that you are using a crossover cable rather than a patch or straight through cable?

The differences in node type shouldn't make a difference, I don't think.
