can share files, but no internet connection

i have a desktop that is connected to a dsl modem via netgear wireless access point/router. my laptop has a netgear wireless adaptor. i am able to communicate between the two computers -- share files, print. but my laptop can't access the internet.

checked the ip address, subnet mask and default gateway. all seems fine. spoke to netgear extensively. they told me it has something to do with a corrupted tcp/ip in my win 98se system. i removed them, then added them back to the network setup in my control panel. still no luck.

no firewall.

what else can i do?!

Do you have the IP settings set manually or through DHCP? Can you ping any addresses on the Internet by IP address? Can you ping the router/gateway?

i set the ip address manually.

ip address 192.168.0.3
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.0.1

can ping the router, but can't ping any websites by ip address or name.

hi...not familiar with netgear routers but this could be the problem.does your router have a security section that u enable antivirus then set the range of ips to be exempt?is it possible the laptops ip is not in this range?if its not it will still be able to use your network however it will not be able to access the internet till u put in the proper range.hope this helps

I guess netgear tech support checked your wireless router configuration with you?

most recent access point have a MAC address filter meaning the access point must recognise the adapter (in this case the laptop MAC Address)
might also be an IP filter list or other settings.

So, guessing that those settings are ok,

Is your laptop setup for another network, like the office?
a proxy client might grab the requests. This was the case with Microsoft Proxy client, also true with other brand.
solution would be to disable them.

Do you have dns entries for the computers?

sounds like to me that the router and the modem have the same net work ip i had the same problem on mine i was using a westel dsl modem and a linksys router the dsl was 192.168.1.254 and the router was 192.168.1.0 had to change the router to 192.168.2.0 to make it work all fine now hope this helps

I have:
2 computers w/ Win 98
D-Link switch
Westell Wirespeed modem

They share files fine One gets internet connection fine. The other one does not. It looks like they are set up identical, but I have to be missing something.

I'm obtaining my ip addresses automatically. They are in range of the modem, all bindings are the same on both computers, dissabled WINS and DNS configs. Both can ping themodem. Odd but true, both cannot ping any outside address.

Any thing else to check?

Here is your solution
First check that your both IP address are releted to same Class and have the same defalult Subnet, and if there is any subnetting, then the class will be same
